Australia is a hot country in the Southern Hemisphere. Our summer is from December 01 to February 28/29. We work until Christmas Eve, then relax for several weeks. It's too hot to work.
We have Christmas on December 25, then starting on December 26, we have various sporting events like the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race and the Boxing Day Test which is a major cricket event.
Then a season of cricket and tennis
December 26 every year. Cricket - Boxing Day Test First up, the Boxing Day Test is held in Melbourne at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, the MCG. It starts around 10 am, and is a major television event. It usually goes for 5 days
December 26 every year. Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race At 1 pm, the Sydney to Hobart yacht race starts. Again, a major television spectacle but on a different channel to the cricket. If you're in Sydney, the best place to see the start of the race is Old South Head Road near Maquarie Lighthouse, but you'll have to get there early because it fills up early.
Australian Open Tennis season is most of January every year.
Australian Grand Prix is usually run in the middle of March each year. Our Grand Prix is held in Melbourne, the capital of Victoria.
State of Origin Rugby LeagueThis is a major event where two Rugby League teams, one from Queensland and one from New South Wales battle for the honours of being the best team for the year. There are three events, usually spread through June and July, usually on Wednesday nights.
AFL Grand Final is always the last Saturday in September. It's a major television event.
NRL Grand Final Traditionally played on the Sunday of the Labour Day Long Weekend, as in the Sunday between 30 September and 06 October each year.
Bathurst and the Supercars season
Melbourne Cup Always the first Tuesday in November, this is an institution in Australia. It's a horse race that stops the nation.
